Location & Scope: The Greenline Project spans 4 km along the Yarra River’s north bank, linking five precincts: Saltwater Wharf, Maritime, Riverpark, the Falls, and Birrarung Marr.
History & Culture: Originally marshy grasslands and wetlands, the river was an important ecological and cultural site for First Nations people. Aboriginal heritage is still present today through cultural nodes such as scar trees and ceremonies.
Current Use: The area has transformed into a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational zones. Activity levels are high in some precincts, but interaction with the river remains inconsistent due to raised paths, road crossings, and underutilised spaces (e.g., Banana Alley).
Environment & Users: Green precincts like Riverpark and Birrarung Marr attract both wildlife and diverse visitors, while areas dominated by offices (Maritime Precinct) attract mainly workers. Enterprise Park contains wetlands that are starting to reintroduce biodiversity, though it suffers from poor accessibility and overshadowing.
Key Themes: Environment, Culture, Place, and Connection, to link ecology, heritage, and human interaction with the riverfront.
Vision

Focus Area: Enterprise Park, chosen for its cultural history and open-space potential.
Design Goal: To create an engaging, healthy, and accessible open green space that celebrates both Aboriginal heritage and contemporary urban life.
Strategies:
-
Integrate native plant displays and biodiversity (supporting landscapes).
-
Provide arts, music, and cultural demonstrations to highlight history and identity.
-
Improve seating and public amenities for comfort and everyday use.
-
Introduce night lighting to activate the site for safe, vibrant nightlife.
Outcome: A welcoming cultural and ecological hub that reconnects people with the river while honouring its layered history.
