History of Tempelhofer Feld, Berlin, Germany

Tempelhofer Feld (386 ha), located in Berlin, Germany, is rich in history and social significance and has been protected by the Law for the Preservation of Tempelhofer Feld since 2014. Once known as an airport with its aviation progressions, it is now an ample open space for recreation, sports, and culture.

Site Context (Schillerkiez)

My chosen focal area of Tempelhofer Feld is located on the east corner of the park. This area is bordered by the Schiller neighbourhood (Schillerkiez), situated in Neukölln, one of the 12 districts in Berlin. Although one of the poorest regions in Germany with weak social infrastructure, Neukölln district has been listed in Time Out’s Ranking for coolest neighbourhoods in 2018, 2021 and 2023. The neighbourhood is known for its affordable rents, vibrant energy, artsy vibes, and multicultural community, favoured by artists, expats, and families. Neukölln has 320,000 residents, 58% comprising ethnic Germans, non-citizens account for 22%, while 48% have migrant backgrounds. Neukölln’s Schillerkiez is popular for its old flats in Wilhelminian style (This German subset of the neo-baroque architecture style was adopted between 1890 and 1918.) and eatery options.

Projects (Community Gardens)

38 projects were selected in a two-phase process in gardening, education, art and culture, and sport. Now, there are 19 active projects on Tempelhof. In connection with Tempelhof Field, the Schiller community has an urban garden in the public park, where they practised growing vegetables for recreational purposes and enjoy the space for relaxation. People from various backgrounds and walks of life visit the garden. The garden’s name is Allmende-Kontor, covering 5,000 sqm. Managed by Allmende-Kontor and Stadtteilgarten Schillerkiez, it features 250 raised beds where more than 500 gardeners cultivate fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
